Renewable energy permit guidance and contact point authority

We give guidance on permits and procedures related to renewable energy projects. You can send us questions related to all kinds of projects e.g. renewable energy production of houses, farms, or large-scale industrial energy production.

Guidance for everyone

Permit guidance is serving instances like private persons, companies, and consultants. Advice is given in permitting of the renewable energy producing projects e.g. environmental permits, building permits, and expropriation permits. We give guidance on general level and on procedural issues. The authorities that process the permits, make the final assessments and decisions. We can assess what kind of permits are needed for your project and advise where you can apply them.

The official procedures of a renewable energy production project are often extensive and multi-stage processes. To the project proceed smoothly, it is good to contact the authorities in good time. Permit applications should be prepared carefully so that their processing is as smooth as possible.

Timeframes for permit and approval procedures

As the renewable energy contact point authority, we supervise the implementation of the timeframes that are set for the permit and approval procedures in renewable energy power palnts that generate electricity. Timeframe for permit and approval procedures is two years for renewable energy power plants. When electricity production capacity is under 150 kW or the project is a modification project the timeframe is one year. Timeframes can be applied for example wind farms, solar power plants, hydroelectric power plants or biogas plants that produce electricity. Timeframe is joint for all the permits and procedures (Act 1145/2020) and all authorities have to process the applications within the timeframe.

We also process applications for an extension of the timeframe, lapse of calculations or a temporary suspension of timeframe.
